The keeper's clan pt3
In the Keeper's territory, sat together in a loose circle, between dozens of both adults and pup haedians, the four reos shared stories of the life on the surface to animated pups. They were common stories, daily events and mundane things, but for creatures that had never seen the life above they were mystical stories of far away world.
As their tale came to a close, a figure stepped into the circle. Khaldor, the Keeper's leader, bore an aura of quiet command as he approached. “Your stories,” Khaldor began, his voice gravelly yet resonant, “your knowledge" he continued, pushing a crystal to the feet of the four reos "please record them in the crystals, so they can help our future generations".
The four roes exchanged uncertain glances. Jeon-e tilted her head in curiosity, Mer’s brows furrowed and Valentine just looked at th crystal. “How?” Valentine asked. “We’ve never done such a thing before. It's not something we do on the surface”
Khaldor’s lips curved into a gentle smile. He lowered himself to his haunches, bringing the crystal into the center of the circle they were forming. It pulsed faintly, casting an blue glow an with inside specks of sparkles floating all over it.
“This crystal,” Khaldor began, “is no ordinary gem. It is a vessel, a keeper of memories. However, it does not record on its own. To record in it you will need magic, and focus, and patience to channel your words to it's depths.” He nudged the crystal with his paw, causing it to roll gently, and the sparkles in it kept twirling like liquid “Do you see thee sparkles?”
The four nodded. “That's what records the story you want to preserve,” Khaldor said. “That shimmery dust is the crystal’s energy, waiting to be shaped. To record your story, you must attune to its resonance and make it permanently fixed into the state of your story. Once fixed in one state, anyone who knows how to read magic will be able to consult it. Now, close your eyes.”
Jeon-e gave a doubtful flick of her tail but complied, as did the others. She had no magical powers to her knowledge, and this was talking about magic.
The sounds of the cavern seemed to recede as they focused inward.
“Now,” Khaldor continued, his voice steady and deliberate, “each of you must picture the story you just told. See it vividly in your mind. Feel it. Relive it. Let the emotions and the images take form. Let the knowledge of what is in it be part of you. And as you do, let your awareness stretch beyond your mind, toward the crystal before you.”
The reos sat in silence, their breathing slowing down as they concentrated. The atmosphere around them shifted, the aura in the cave growing charged as they poured all their efforts into recording to the crystal.
Khaldor’s voice was a low murmur now, guiding them. “The magic of the crystal is not unlike the energy of life itself. It responds to attempts at connection, to what is in your mind. You must reach for it with your intent. Imagine your story flowing like a river, a mental path right through the air, with the end being the crystal. "
Cailu felt a strange warmth pooling in his chest, a tingling that spread to his limbs. He thought of the information the three vayrons had shared with him as they traveled, and the new information they had shared with the Keeper's clan until now. Slowly, the warmth began to consolidate, a single sensation right in the center of his forehead. He dared to open his eyes and saw faint wisps of light, soft and wavy looking, finding their path from him to the crystal.
Jeon-e gasped softly. She felt a snap in her brain, weird and electric, and she squeezed her eyes to bear the sensation. Her thoughts focused, her mind trying to share as many technical details as it can to the crystal. She imagined her words solidifying into water that flowed from her and to the crystal.
Mer had been more insecure and hesitated in putting the effort. The sensation was unfamiliar, and he was wary of how easy it felt to establish a connection with the crystal. He might have had some magical powers and not known about it, so it was easier for him. He drew a deep breath to calm himself, trusting in Khaldor’s guidance.
Valentine, who had preferred to watch the others, doubted he would be able to do it. He closed his eyes and tentatively reached out with his mind, only for a burst of energy to shoot straight out of him towards the crystal, charging it fully on his own.
Khaldor watched in silence, his expression one of stupor and approval. The crystal’s glow intensified, its hues shifting rapidly as it absorbed the collective energy. It pulsed with a rhythm that felt alive, as though it were breathing, and trembled where it was placed on the floor.
Soon enough, the crystal emitted a light and then stopped moving.
Once they looked, they could see the sparkles etched right below the surface, unmoving.
