[FAIR '24] Alowyn - Costume Tent

“It’s my turn to pick something now!” Alowyn smiled at her brother’s eye roll.

“Fine,” Konstantin threw his hands up and knew he wasn’t going to like it.

The pair moved through the snowy fairgrounds as the sun shone high above them. It was a beautiful cold Roenden day. Many reoseans moved around the fairground taking in the sights. Alowyn guided them through the crowds to make their way to the costume tent. It was a free-for-all outside the tent and inside as reoseans just grabbed anything they wanted to try on.

“I’m not doing this,” Konstantin hissed.

“Yes you are,” Alowyn pushed him further into the tent, “It’ll be fun.”

Konstantin mocked the phrase, but let Alowyn usher him to one side of the tent where hats, masks, scarves, and other face accessories were. Alowyn busied herself sifting through the piles of options. She found a white and gold scarf for herself that she wrapped around her neck. However, she didn’t pause to see how it looked as she continued to try and find something for Konstantin.

Konstantin was looking at everything over Alowyn’s shoulder with mild curiosity. He would see the odd thing that struck his fancy but never mentioned anything to Alowyn when she buried it under other accessories. He remained quiet, becoming more and more curious about what his sister would pick for him to wear. To his delight, there was a pair of golden-rimmed glasses that Alowyn picked up, examined, and then passed to him without a word.

The pair moved away from the pile to see how everything looked in the mirrors. They each had one accessory so far, but Alowyn was determined to have them decked out by the time they left the tent. Alowyn turned back to the piles, while Konstantin looked around the tent at all the reoseans bustling about. It was hot in the tent and the snowy terrain the tent was built on top of had melted away leaving them all to stand on stone. The only thing that saved everyone from the growing heat was the odd cold breeze that burst through the tent flaps every once in a while. Konstantin could see the crowd’s collective sigh when it hit.

“Here, try this on,” Alowyn pulled Konstantin’s attention back to the pile of accessories.

“Okay,” Konstantin hesitated, not sure what Alowyn was going to pull out of the pile.

Alowyn laughed at her brother’s expression when she pulled out a mask that had long black hair attached to it.

“Nope,” Konstantin shook his head, “I like the glasses.”

“Wear both,” Alowyn said, passing him the mask.

Alowyn pulled out another matching mask that had some blue hair attached to it. She placed the mask on her face and then brushed the hair into her mane. She took off the white and gold scarf and traded it for a blue feather boa that matched her mask. Konstantin tried to hide his laughter when he saw her. From his perspective, blue wasn’t her colour. Alowyn ignored him and shoved the mask and another scarf into his hands.

“Just for now,” Alowyn gave him big eyes, “Try it on.”

Konstantin sighed, “Fine.”

He pulled the mask over his face after he placed the glasses on the table next to him. He mirrored Alowyn’s process as he brushed his mane through the hair on the mask. The effect made it look like he had black streaks through his mane. After that was settled, Konstantin flipped the black scarf around his neck. Alowyn giggled and clapped.

“See perfect,” Alowyn laughed and pulled him towards one of the mirrors.

Konstantin laughed with his sister. The designs on the masks were strange and not something either of them had seen before, but when they both relaxed they had a good time trying things on for the laugh. The pair ended up leaving the masks on and tried to find other accessories to go with the ensemble. They were able to ignore the heat in the tent by moving to the piles near the flaps of the tent so they would be the first ones to feel the cool Roenden air when it breezed through.

They caught sight of the colourful lights of the fair glitter off the snowy ground when the flaps of the tent rustled when they realized how late it was. They had been in the tent for hours, but they both admitted it was fun.
