Warrenfall was beautiful in spring. Bryidae could see flowers, birds and all kind of insects around the forest, no matter where she looked.
There were nice butterflies flying around deep red flowers and she even spotted a deer scratching it's new antlers on the rough bark of a nearby tree.
The winged Vayron was laying down in the highest branches of a tall tree, watching everything from above. She was enjoying the peace, the bright colours and the sun, but she could feel something weird in the air.
There was... A ominous presence, in her forest. Her grey wings twitched, and a grimace formed on her black snout.
That presence was definitely not good. It felt cold in her body, freezing her bones... But somehow, it wasn't disturbing the other animals.
“Mh... Probably a mentalist, then.”
She mumbled to herself, bright blue eyes scanning the area. If she was dealing with a mentalist, it could mean two different things: one, the mentalist didn't actually mean any harm, and was just practising by themselves, or... The second option and the more probable one, was that the mentalist was chasing someone, trying to hurt them by scaring them deep in the woods.
That was not something Bryidae was going to let slip. She raised from her spot, stretching her limbs, then she dove down.
Her grey wings opened, beating the air and trapping the winds, letting her soar over the treetops. She scanned the area again, noticing a lack of animals in the southern part of the forest.
'The mentalist is using their powers to scare any intelligent being around, but is not bothered by the animals. If they are missing, it only means one thing... They are near!'
Bryidae felt a plum of fire in her throat, anger flaring as she smelt a faint track of blood.
Growling she plunged down, snapping a few branches, until she reached the ground. She glided on the soft grass, smelling the air again.
Yes, there it was: blood in the air, and claw marks in the ground.
Bryidae felt another flame in her throat, and this time she let it loose, scorching the ground a little bit. Someone was hurting another Reosean in her home... She was not going to allow it!
With a growl, she started tracking the mentalist and their victim, following their imprints in the ground.
---
It took nearly two hours, but now she could feel it way stronger than before: the mentalist was using their powers at the maximum, affecting anything in a fairly large radius. Animals, before unaffected, had ran away in fright, even the insect went into hiding, as if a large storm was coming.
“Stop running! I won't let you!”
Bryidae heard a shout, a yelp and growling. She hurried toward the noise, heart thumping in her chest from both the exhaustion and the unnatural fear, instilled by the mentalist's magic.
The first thing she saw, between the trees, was a Tyrian. It was big, with glowing green eyes and a dark, long mane. Her body was brown, with darkened head , legs and tail.
She was growling angrily at a Chaser, who trembled in fear under her. The Chaser was no older than a few years, clearly more pup than teen. That made Bryidae's blood boil. Why hurt someone that much smaller and younger than you?
She released more flames from her maw, stepping forward.
“What is going on here?”
She thundered, voice loud and filled with anger.
The Empyrian turned, glowing eyes meeting hers.
“My, we have an intruder in our little conversation!”
“Doesn't look like a conversation to me.”
Growled back Bryidae, ears flat on her neck and smoke coming out of her nostrils. The mentalist laughed, but her posture was off: she was too tense. It was clear that she didn't expect someone to follow them, especially since she was using her magic to infuse fear into any intelligent being.
“What it looks like doesn't matter to you. Leave, or-”
“Or?”
Bryidae taunted, feeling her throat and lungs grow warmer and warmer.
The mentalist screeched, flaring her wings, before grabbing the poor Chaser by the torso and flying off, breaking more than a few branches to reach the open sky. With a loud bark Bryidae followed, beating her wings to gain more speed. Her wings were a bit smaller, but it also meant that she had an advantage in sharp turns and twists.
The two soared up in the sky, while the Chaser dangled from the back legs of the Empyrian, screaming his lungs out.
Bryidae let some more smoke out with a growl, but right then the mentalist decided to just drop the poor guy.
“AAAAAAAAAAAA-”
Bryidae dove and snatched him with her paws before he could meet a gruesome death, but then she felt her wings lock, as if they were trapped in a steel grip. The winged puller could hear the Empyrian laugh: it was clearly her mentalist's magic that was making her wings feel so heavy and trapped. The vayron grumbled, showing her fangs, then forced her wings to open a bit more, enough for her to glide to the treetops. She crash-landed in a tree, letting go of the Chaser, who grabbed the branches with little claws and fearful eyes.
“Will you be able to get down on your own?”
She asked, urgency in her voice. She couldn't let the mentalist run wild in Warrenfall's forests, after all.
The Chaser, still shaken, nodded.
“Good.”
Then, Bryidae flew off, chasing the mad reosean.
---
It took surprisingly only a few minutes to catch up with the Empyrian, and Bryidae could bet she didn't expect her to come back and continue their fight-chasing.
“Ugh- so annoying! Why do you even bother?! It's not like it is your friend!”
She screamed, but this time Bryidae didn't answer. Only a fool would abandon someone if they had the power to save them.
Her magic flared, and Bryidae let out a fiery, scorching flame. The red and orange fire burned hotter than normal, having build up for quite a bit of time.
The Empyrian screamed, trying to avoid the flames, but Bryidae didn't let her.
With her fire she burned the tip of the Empyrian wings, making her suffer every time she tried to turn sharply, the wind smacking against the sensitive skin now.
“You-”
She tried to scare off Bryidae again, this time showing her images of death in her own mind. But that didn't stop the Vayron from breathing in and letting out more fire.
The other cried out in pain, starting to flail and loose control over her flying.
Bryidae then soared higher, until she was right above the Empyrian, then she dove down, letting out more fire and smacking against the other's back.
The Tyrian screamed again, and this time she fell, the burns too severe to continue her fighting.
The mentalist crashed in the treetops, and Bryidae descended shortly after, keeping her under watch.
It was clear that the mentalist wasn't going to get up any time soon. So the winged Vayron relaxed, climbing another tree. Now, she could only wait for the Chaser to call the guards, so they could collect the mentalist.
---
When the guards arrived, ready with nets and ropes, they only found the Empyrian still out cold. Of the grey winged Vayron, there was no sign at all.
Nobody noticed bright, blue eyes following every movement.
